Learn Collocations, Not Just Word Lists

Knowing a word is not the same as knowing how it combines. Collocations make your speech natural. Here is how to study word partnerships instead of isolated translations.

Learners memorize "make," "do," and "strong," then produce stiff sentences natives never say. The missing piece is collocation: the habitual partnership between words. You do not just learn "decision." You learn "make a decision."

What collocations are

Collocations are words that prefer each other's company. "Heavy rain," "catch a bus," "strong coffee." They are not always logical. They are conventional. Native speakers store them as chunks.

Why lists of single words plateau your speaking

Isolated translations invite word-by-word assembly. That assembly sounds foreign even when every piece is "correct." Chunks sound ready-made because they are.

How to notice collocations in the wild

When you read or hear a useful phrase, save the whole unit. Not just the new noun. If a podcast says "raise a concern," that trio is the card.

Camera translation helps on signs and packaging, but your job is to capture the phrase shape, not only the dictionary headword.

Make flashcards that test chunks

Front: "to ____ a decision" or a native-language prompt for the whole phrase. Back: the full collocation plus one example. Lexyk decks work best when cards carry context, not orphaned words.

Practice swapping inside a pattern

Learn "make a decision," then try "make a plan," "make a mistake." Patterns multiply faster than unrelated items.

Correct the stiff phrases you already use

Ask a partner or AI voice chat to upgrade your common sentences. Replace literal translations with natural partnerships. Keep a small "upgrade list" of ten collocations a week.

A weekly collocation habit

Collect ten chunks from media. Review them daily. Use three in writing or speaking. Retire them when they feel automatic.

Stop collecting lonely words. Collect the company they keep. That is how vocabulary starts sounding like a language instead of a glossary.
