Beginners often download a giant word list and drown. The first 500 words should feel like a toolkit, not a museum catalog. Choose them with frequency, personal life, and sentence usefulness in mind.

Start with high-frequency function words

You need the glue: pronouns, question words, common verbs, negations, and polite phrases. These appear everywhere. Learning "because" and "want" early unlocks more sentences than learning "hedgehog" early, even if hedgehogs are cute.
