The Forgetting Curve: Why Daily Vocabulary Review Matters

You do not forget words because you are bad at languages. You forget on a schedule. Here is how the forgetting curve works and how daily review beats cramming.

Memory decays fast after first exposure, then more slowly. That pattern is the forgetting curve. Language learners meet it every time a "known" word disappears overnight. Daily review is how you interrupt the drop.

The curve in everyday terms

See a word once, and much of it is gone within a day. See it again just in time, and the next fade is slower. Each successful retrieval flattens the curve.

Cramming piles exposures together, so you feel fluent until a week later.

Why daily beats "when I have time"

"When I have time" usually means after forgetting has already won. A short daily review catches words near the edge of loss. That is the whole logic of spaced repetition.

What to do in the daily session

Clear due cards first. Speak answers. Be honest about misses. Add new words only after dues are handled. Lexyk schedules the "just in time" moments so you do not guess intervals.

What happens if you skip three days

The queue balloons. Learners then rush, mark cards easy, and teach the algorithm the wrong lessons. After a skip, do a recovery day: reviews only, no new cards, shorter rounds until stable.

Pair review with one real use

After cards, use two words in a sentence or voice prompt. Review prevents loss. Use creates ownership.

A sustainable daily minimum

Three to ten minutes. Same trigger each day. If life explodes, do twenty cards and stop. The streak that matters is contact with the curve, not theatrical study.

You are not fighting a character flaw. You are working with a predictable memory system. Show up daily, and the curve bends in your favor.
