Dictionary taps can become a compulsion. Every unknown word triggers a lookup, the story fragments, and you finish a page exhausted. Context-first reading builds the guessing skill fluent readers use constantly.

Use the 90 percent rule

If you understand enough to follow the plot or argument, keep going. Mark unknowns lightly. Look up after a section, not after every line.

Look up immediately when meaning collapses

If a sentence is the key to everything that follows and you are lost, check it. Context is a tool, not a dare.
