A deck called "Spanish words" becomes a junk drawer. Thematic decks behave like toolkits: cafe, clinic, job interview, train travel. You study a situation, then you can enter that situation.

Choose themes from upcoming needs

Trip in six weeks? Build airport, hotel, and food. New job? Build meeting verbs and email phrases. Themes with deadlines beat abstract "advanced adjectives."

Keep themes small

30-60 cards per theme is plenty. Huge themes recreate the junk drawer. Finish one, maintain it lightly, start another.

Include verbs, questions, and repair phrases

A food theme needs "I am allergic," "Can I get," and "too spicy," not only noun pictures. Situations run on actions and politeness.

Source words from real material

Menus, HR pages, packing lists, and camera scans of signs. Lexyk capture tools help you pull themes from the world instead of inventing them from memory.

Study themes in bursts

Spend a week dense on one theme, then mix review with your general deck. Burst learning creates temporary immersion inside a topic.

Retire themes that no longer matter

Completed the trip? Keep a short maintenance set. Archive the rest. Your active deck should match your current life.

Example starter themes

Coffee shop. Doctor visit. Small talk. Directions. Work status updates. Each one is a mini language you can finish.

Build fewer, better decks. When vocabulary has a job to do, you will remember to use it.
